Everyone is talking about sustainability. But what does this megatrend actually mean for companies and what impact does it have for the management of a company? This article addresses the extent to which sustainability / corporate social responsibility and corporate governance 4.0 (in the sense of governance, risk, compliance (GRC)) are compatible. For this purpose, a wide variety of definitions, laws, standards, studies and sustainability reports were analyzed for both approaches as part of a master's thesis. Their core topics were identified and compared. It became apparent that almost every component of the GRC approach also belongs to the core topics of sustainability / CSR. These include, for example, sustainable, ethical corporate governance, compliance, risk management, human rights and environmental management. It was also noted that the GRC approach is, however, mostly understood as a burdensome duty instead of an important management and decision-making tool. A rethink is needed here. If you want to remain fit for the future, you have to rethink corporate governance and place sustainability and corporate social responsibility at the core of your corporate strategy.
